How did the massacre effect the US Military?
The My Lai Massacre may have briefly increased troop morale in some, but in the long run, it did nothing but decrease it. The war in Vietnam had been very slow going, and some troops were excited to finally have some successful action. However, upon hearing about this event back at home, the public exploded. Even more Americans began to stop supporting the war. With the knowledge that the country they were fighting for no longer backed them up caused a significant drop in troop morale and attitude. Soldiers and veterans were despised and hated.
Out of the entire Charlie Company, only the Lieutenant of the platoon was convicted for the crimes that these soldiers committed at My Lai. The rest of the company were tried but then set free for their crimes.
