America's Opinion of the Cambodian Incursion
Public OpinionDuring and after the campaign in Cambodia many U. S. students lead protests against Richard Nixon's actions. On May 4, 1970 in Kent, Ohio students lead a large protest in Kent State. The president sent the National Guard in to stop the protest, but it ended in a violent way. Four unarmed students were killed and nine were wounded. Then two days later, four demonstrators were wounded at University of Buffalo. On May eighth 100,000 protesters gathered in Washington and another 150,000 in San Francisco. Nationwide, 50 ROTC buildings were destroyed and burned down. With protests all across the Nation the National Guard was sent to over twenty-one Universities and campuses across the Nation. The public opinion on the Cambodian Campaign was not positive, but most protests were peaceful and civilized.
